Suzuki to start electric car battery plant in Gujarat through JV

Maruti‘s Japanese partner Suzuki Motor Corp will set up a plant for lithium-ion batteries at Hansalpur in Gujarat while also starting work on a third car-making plant at the manufacturing location in the state.

The lithium-ion plant is being set up in partnership with Densoand Toshiba and will start production by 2020, Suzuki Chairman Osamu Suzuki said in Gujarat at a business meet in the presence of prime minister Narendra Modi and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe

The lithium-ion plant will see the partners invest $180 million (Rs 1,151 crore). While Toshiba will make the cell module, it will be built on Denso’s technology. Suzuki will use these on its cars.

Suzuki, which has a 2.5 lakh annual capacity in the state, is in the process of setting up a similar capacity Plant B which will be operational by 2019.
The company Chairman said it will also set up a new Plant C of similar capacity to take its overall production capacity to 7.5 lakh units annually from Gujarat.
